When it comes to taking care of your natural hair; you want to know what level of porosity you have. (Scroll down to see how to test porosity.)
The three different kinds are:
~ Low porosity (Cuticles are close together which makes it harder for moisture to penetrate your hair.)
~Medium porosity (Cuticles are less tightly bound causing moisture to penetrate your hair and last for a longer period of time.)
~High porosity (Moisture easily penetrates hair shaft easily but doesn't last long due to cuticles having gaps or spaces in between them.
Extra Hair Tips
- ALWAYS make sure to wash conditioner out with cool water. Cool water locks in moisture. - Test heat protectant product with q-tip. (Dip q-tip into heat protectant and test flame resistancy. Recomeneded brands: Kenra, Paul mitchell, Chi, Bio silk, Design Essentials, and cantu heat resistant. -

Use protein free conditioners.

Apply conditioner to hair that is already wet.

Aim for ingredients like glycerin and honey in shampoos and conditioners.

Apply heat when conditioning hair. (Steamer,heat cap, or hooded dryer, or use shower cap over once conditioner is added.)

Look for ingredients like butters and oils in shampoos and conditioners.

Use leave in conditioners and sealers.

Use a heat protectant products on hair whenever you apply heat including before blow dry.

Avoid hot water when shampooing and conditioning.
The following is a step-by-step guide to determine hair porosity.
1. Fill a glass with room temperature water.
2. Take a clean strand of hair and gently place into the glass.
3. Observe how your hair reacts.
-If your hair floats on the surface, you likely have low porosity hair.
-If your hair sinks slowly, you likely have normal porosity.
- If your hair sinks quickly, you likely have high porosity.
4. Repeat this process on different strands of hair to get a more accurate reading.
5. Once you determined your hairs porosity. You can tailor your hair care routine accordingly.
